In January 2019 I was blessed to participate for the second time in a work/mission project with a group sponsored by West End Christian Reformed Church, Edmonton and supported by World Renew and Diaconia Nacionel de Honduras. The work was more physical than last year - mixing concrete, pouring cement floors and carrying bricks and rocks - which is great for an office worker like me.
One of the highlights was hiking up El Trigre mountain with team members Jim, Nathan and Johan, our translator Carlos and our guide Santos and his family. During the 70’s and 80’s, the USA had a base at the top of the mountain to keep an eye on Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Today it is used as a base for cell phone towers.
I left Honduras feeling more optimistic for Playa Negra, the community we served and the country as a whole due to the courageous work of Association for a More Just Society Honduras (https://www.ajs-us.org/) which works in the areas of peace and security and anti-corruption.
